Vaccines Q & A

Why do I need vaccines?

Vaccines are life-saving measures that eradicated or virtually eliminated many serious diseases like diphtheria, bacterial influenza, measles, and mumps in the past. Today, vaccinations help save lives in adults affected by flu and other potentially severe illnesses.

Although you have most vaccinations as a child, you need certain vaccinations as an adult to avoid serious illness.

By having the vaccinations you need, you’re also helping protect your family, other loved ones, and everyone you come in contact with from serious diseases.

At Millennium Park Medical Associates, Dr. Khan recommends a specific vaccination schedule based on your age, health, and whether you’re traveling internationally soon.

What vaccines do I need as an adult?

It can vary by situation, but the vaccinations you may need include:

  • Seasonal influenza yearly for every adult
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap), if you didn’t get it previously
  • Shingles, for all healthy adults starting at age 50
  • Pneumococcal, starting at age 65 (or earlier depending on your risk)
  • Hepatitis B, if you have diabetes or prediabetes
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV), depending on age and risk factors
  • Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), for adults over 65
  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), for adults with a weak immune system

Depending on your travel plans, Dr. Khan may recommend other vaccines, too. Each country has its own requirements for entry, so make sure you bring a copy of your itinerary to Millennium Park Medical Associates before any international travel so they can customize your care.

What happens when I get vaccines?

Many patients have vaccines as part of their annual physical or other regular medical care. Before your vaccinations, Dr. Khan reviews your health history and discusses your needs with you. The process is fast and relatively painless for most patients. You can go home immediately afterward.
